Our History |

Our Heritage
The original strands in the rich tapestry of First Presbyterian Church of Sugar Land were intertwined with Imperial Sugar Company. In the early 1900’s , Sugar Land was a “company Town”. Consequently, Imperial Sugar provided a one-room frame building which functioned as a school during the week and accommodated a variety of religious services on the weekends.

With God’s provision of this facility, Brazos Presbytery established First Presbyterian Sugar Land as a home mission church on October 6, 1916. After building our own facility in 1921, our congregation grew but also experienced the ravishes of the Depression and World War II. Yet |

Following World War II, the church prospered in both number and spirit. Because of this growth, a new church site was chosen. Our present building was completed in February 1962 and in 1977 the Education Building was finished. Additionally, after the merger in 1980 of the Brazos Presbytery (PCUS) with Gulf Coast Presbytery (UPCUSA) to form |

Our new Sanctuary was completed and dedicated in May of 2003. The congregation looks forward to the exciting challenges of the future, but wishes to always honor those who have come before. To that end our present fellowship hall (old Sanctuary) proudly exhibit’s a brightly colored tapestry in the form of a descending dove. The dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit who led our predecessors through joyous and grievous times with love and strength - we pray our hearts too will be open to such leading. |

God lovingly nurtured a remnant who faithfully wove from their heritage of heartache, practical strength, and love. The tapestry remained strong. |
